Ghandhi JB, Bright AG, Herold RE. International Journal of Engine Research 10(23): 121-132 April 2009. Planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) of a dopant added to the fuel, which was well mixed with the intake air upstream of the engine, was used to investigate inhomogeneities that arise from the incomplete mixing of the intake charge with the residual gas left in the cylinder from the previous cycle.

Ghandhi JB, Heim DM. Review of Scientific Instruments 80 (5): 056105 May 2009. An optimized optical system for back-illuminated imaging was developed and was applied to automotive-type fuel injectors; the system provides significantly higher light collection efficiency than standard flood illumination. An engineered diffuser is used to distribute an extended light source through a controlled range of angles, and a field lens is used to redirect the light to the camera.

Schrewe MR, Ghandhi JB, Proceedings of the Combustion Institute 31 2871-2878 Part 2 2007. The role of thermal boundary layers on homogeneous charge compression ignited engine combustion was directly evaluated by measuring the spatial profile of the formaldehyde concentration near the combustion chamber wall.
