  • "Factors affecting bunker silo densities"
Muck, R.E. and B.J. Holmes.  2000. Applied Agriculture in Engineering 16(6):613-619. Density in bunker silos on commercial farms is highly variable.  High densities in silos reduce the amount of oxygen available reducing plant and microbial respiration and spoilage as well as increasing the silos capacity.  This paper details the factors which determine the silos densities.  The factors are tractor weight, packing time per ton as fed, how thinly the load is spread, and dry matter content.

  • "Precision land application of animal manure slurry"
England, T., B.J. Holmes, R.T. Schuler, R. Silha and R.J. Straub.  2002.  ASAE Paper No. 02-1012, American Society of Agricultural Engineers, St. Joseph, MI. Regulations by the EPA make it necessary for farmers to know that amount of nutrients being supplied to their crops through manure application.  Present technology for manure distribution has limited capabilities to control nutrient application.  The goal of this project was to evaluate the feasibility of developing a feedback  control system, which would incorporate a gravimetric discharge rate signal and provide an adjustable discharge rate during application.
